Cleopatra Gate

Cleopatra Gate is at the entrance of Tarsus. There are Mountain Gate, City Gate and Sea Gate of ramparts that were built on the Byzantine Period. While Evliya Celebi was telling about Tarsus in his Seyahatname, he gave the name of the gate of pier to this gate.

Khorasan mortar was used in the construction of the door. Edge of the gate is in the shape of Horseshoe, and the height of it from ground is 6.17 m, while the depth of it is 6.18 m. Ramparts of Tarsus with three doors which were strong until the end of 18th century were collapsed by the Egyptian Abraham Pasha in 1835, and Sea gate with single arched was remained on only two legs.

When Egyptian Queen, Cleopatra came with her lover the Roman General, Anthony in order to meet in Tarsus, they were welcomed with a big ceremony on Gozlukule that was the port of that day, and it was said that they came to the city from sea gate. Therefore, Sea Gate is also called as Cleopatra's Gate.
